“Had a great day with Emma at the Chester improv comedy workshop and met some very talented people. Highly recommend these workshops and hope one can be arranged in Manchester – but well worth the journey to Chester today. Emma has great energy and is so passionate about what she does and makes everyone feel at ease. Thank you!” (Brigid)
A WHOLE AFTERNOON OF LEARNING HOW TO IMPROVISE COMEDY!
EVERY LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE WELCOME BUT THIS IS PARTICULARLY SUITED TO ANYONE WHO HAS NEVER TRIED COMEDY IMPROV BEFORE OR THOSE WHO HAVE DONE A BIT OF IMPROV AND WANTS TO DO MORE!
Comedy improvisation is spontaneously making up short scenes without a script.
Improv is fun, creative and playful and helps you develop your own creativity, spontaneity, self-confidence and free-thinking. Lots of laughter too!
Improvisation is collaborative, supportive and generous and you will never be expected to ‘perform’ on your own. These are fully participatory sessions.
What Happens in a Comedy Improv Workshop?
The workshop starts with ice breaker games, where playful silliness is encouraged! Everyone is involved and relaxes and gets to know each other through playful games.
The principles of improvisation are explored and will guide you through the workshop.
Put simply the principles of improv are:
LISTEN SAY YES YES AND
Everyone can improvise. You don’t have to ‘be funny’, or clever or try to impress.
As long as you are listening to your scene partners, (LISTEN), accepting their ideas and offers (SAY YES), and adding your own ideas too (YES AND), then you will be improvising!
After warming up, we will explore simple tips to create fun and interesting characters.
We will lead into simple, very short improvised scenes and games – some of you might be familiar with the TV show Whose Line is it Anyway, many of the games are inspired by this format.
This course is perfect for:
People who have none or little experience of doing improv or acting.
People who have some experience of improv or acting but want to work on their improvisation skills
People who are naturally curious
People who are open-minded
People who want to try something different
People who want to play and laugh!
Stressed and busy people who want to have a stress-busting laugh in a skilled and structured environment
Creative people who might be feeling ‘stuck’ or ‘blocked’
