Improvisation for Actors - One Day Intensive
Build confidence, flexibility, and freedom on stage.
Do you feel anxious at the thought of acting without a script?
Improvisation can seem scary if you’re used to acting with a script, but it’s an essential tool for actors and frequently asked for in auditions and rehearsals. Improvisation builds confidence, flexibility, a deeper way to listen and be present in the moment.
Improvisation for Actors is a one day intensive workshop designed specifically for actors used to working with a script who want to learn the fundamentals of how to work without one.
. You’ll learn:
The principles of improvisation – the tools that help you spontaneously create authentic and effective characters and scenes.
How to think on your feet – exercises that help you to be present, listen deeply and respond truthfully in the moment
Techniques to create characters spontaneously – letting go of self-consciousness and embracing creativity with vocal, physical and spatial choices
Deepening the connection with your scene partners - understand that creating and sustaining improvised scenes is a co-creation between you and your scene partners moment by moment.
Exercises to develop quick thinking, bold choices, and authentic reactions - all of which will be super fun and playful!
By the end of the class, you’ll have some improvisation skills in your tool box to enable you to feel more confident acting without a script and stepping into the unknown.
No prior improvisation experience is needed, however some acting with script experience is required and your curiosity and willingness to play! (and don't worry this workshop isn’t about ‘being funny’ - the focus is on improvisational acting where humour may be a by-product - or not!)
Facilitated by Emma Bird:
Emma founded Liverpool Comedy Improv in 2015 and has spent the past 18 years specialising in improvisational theatre, both as a performer and teacher. With 35 years experience as an actor and theatre director Emma is a seasoned professional in theatre making. This workshop combines her deep understanding of acting and her knowledge of improvisation. In addition to her work with Liverpool Comedy Improv, she is a freelance theatre director at Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre.
